Conference: “Government, Secrecy, and National Security”

The Center on National Security at Fordham Law School (CNS) will be holding an exciting, all-day conference on October 16th on “Government, Secrecy, and National Security.”

CNS will convene leading experts, lawyers, academics, journalists and public officials to discuss the recent upsurge in controversy over public policies that emphasize the need for government secrecy over the public’s right to transparency.

The conference will take place from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM at Fordham Law School, McNally Amphitheater, located at 140 W. 62nd Street (see attached flyer for more details).

Panelists include:

• Kenneth Wainstein, former National Security Advisor in the last Bush Administration.

• James Robertson, former U.S. District Judge who also served on the FISA court and has

presided over high-profile cases in the “war on terror” including Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.

• Marty Lederman, Former Deputy Assistant AG in the Office of Legal Counsel, who has

authored seminal government documents on national security issues.

• Scott Shane, NY Times reporter who has written on important national security issues,

including the use of waterboarding tactics by the CIA and President Obama’s personal

involvement in his administration’s undisclosed drone program.

• Neil MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

• John Rizzo, former acting General Counsel at the CIA for the first nine years of the “war

on terror,” who had personally signed off on all CIA-directed drone attacks from

September 2001 until October 2009.

• Steven Aftergood, editor of Secrecy News, who has published thousands of leaked

documents on his blog, and yet turned down an invitation to join the board of directors at

Wikileaks, and instead sharply criticized the organization for ignoring the rule of law and

individual’s right to privacy.

• Ben Wizner, Director of ACLU’s Speech, Privacy & Technology Project.

• Glenn Fine, Former Inspector General of the US Department of Justice.

Please RSVP to nationalsecurity@law.fordham.edu with “Secrecy” in the subject line. Forward to anyone who might be interested.
